Managing Stress

Most people know that managing stress levels is an important part of overall health, but it is also important for recovery from a hard workout. High stress levels will negatively impact your training. You may have heard of the "flight or fight" response that we call have, but did you know there is also a "relaxation response" we can tap into? It was big news when discovered by Harvard Professor Dr Benson and his book on the topic has sold over 4 million copies. I recommend Relaxation Response for a primer on how to use your body's natural ability to relax. It also includes an enormous list of medical research and references.

Because the approach is based on natural physiological responses of our bodies it is not tied to any specific religion and will work for both believers and secularists. The generic technique can explained quickly:

1) Pick a word, short phrase, or prayer that is firmly rooted in your belief system.
2) Sit quietly in a comfortable position.
3) Close your eyes.
4) Relax your muscles, progressing from you feet to your calves, thighs, abdomen, shoulders, head, and neck.
5) Breath slowly and naturally, and as you do, say your focus word, sound, phrase, or prayer silently to yourself as you exhale.
6) Assume a passive attitude. Don't worry about how wel you're doing. When other thoughts come to mind, simply say to yourself "oh well" and gently return to your repetition.
7) Continue for 10-20 minutes.
8) Practice one or twice daily.
